Maine Island Trail Association

“The Maine Island Trail Association is a membership organization dedicated to the protection and enjoyment of the wild islands of coastal Maine. Founded in 1988 to administer the Maine Island Trail, MITA embraces the powerfully simple idea that care of the islands can be left to the users of these treasured and fragile places. Our ability to turn island users into island stewards is why islands visited by members tend to be in better shape than those left alone.

Their members include paddlers, sailors, motor boaters, and land-lubbers alike. They form a powerful force of people actively committed to the care and protection of the wild islands of Maine. We hope you’ll join them and the many like-minded people who keep the Trail, and the islands, alive and well. MITA members receive comprehensive information about the Trail, helpful tips for safe and responsible boating, and guidelines for low-impact recreation. Members also support ongoing stewardship and education efforts aimed at preserving Trail sites and experiences for future generations.”

Deer Isle Granite Museum

Stonington, Maine’s Deer Isle Granite Museum features a unique 3D model of the granite quarry on nearby Crotch Island, as it was operated in the early 1900s.

Although it is tiny, the museum is a can’t-miss experience if you are visiting the picturesque fishing village of Stonington on the Maine coast. The museum is located in the old Webb Building on Main Street and easy to find as you enter town via Route 15.

The museum’s exhibits celebrate the skill and bravery of Stonington’s quarrymen, as well as the fascinating history of the Deer Isle granite industry. The quarriers’ risky work cut the distinctive pink granite used in such 20th century monuments as New York’s Rockefeller Center, approaches to the Manhattan and George Washington Bridges and the John F. Kennedy Memorial in Arlington National Cemetery.

The museum is open Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays from 12-4.

Nellieville, or Nervous Nellie's, is an eclectic campus covering several acres in an idyllic island setting, a one-time homestead and heirloom orchard at the edge of a spruce forest.  We make about 300 jars of jam a day by hand year-round in the jelly kitchen--a tiny white Cape cottage--using mainly Maine fruits.  Peter's sculpture workshop is a former general store that was moved here in several large pieces on a flatbed truck .

The grounds are meadows and woods filled with sculptures made by Peter from discarded metal, locally-milled lumber, dump-foraged material.  A Western town--jail, lawyer's office, fortune teller, hotel, saloon, Chinese laundry--sits shoulder to shoulder with a Delta-style juke joint, a Deer Isle general store, a church, a Grail castle, wizard's tower, 50's garage complete with jam session, all comprise Nellieville, a lifelong work in progress.

The adventurous ones may go down onto the float to personally pick out their lobsters for dinner. Somehow a vacation in Maine isn’t complete for most people unless they’ve had a fresh caught lobster, and more than one person has commented that they’ve never had better than one from Stonington.

El El Frijoles

The seemingly simple menu, including burritos, soft tacos, empanadas and quesadillas is pretty familiar to anyone who has ever walked the streets of San Francisco, Los Angeles or practically any town in the Southwest. The food that is served, however, is delightfully complex and interesting--more like what one might expect in a hip, urban eatery than from a take-out joint in a barn in the woods. The cuisine is a simple blending of traditional Mexican street food and Downeast Maine's bounty of delicious, local ingredients. The food is spicy, in that it has bold, interesting flavors, but it's not spicy hot until you visit the salsa bar and ladle on some of the fresh, house-made salsas or sample the collection of hot sauces from around the world.

IThe historic Stonington Opera House celebrated its centennial in 2012 – but that was only 100 years of the current structure. The building you see today is the third “amusement hall,” as it was originally called, on this site and wears the patina of more than a century of community history, events, and restoration.

The Stonington Opera House has been a multi-purpose building from its inception. Vaudeville, Chatauqua performances, plays, film, dances, high school graduations, town hall meetings, basketball games, and even roller skating have all found a home here.
